Schools should teach more statistics, less calculus

reading time 1 min

Why don’t (most) public schools teach statistics?

My theory is that how we teach math was most recently reformed during the space race. The space race depended on Calculous: physicists who can calculate trajectories, orbits, etc. and that is all calculus. Statistics? Who the f— cares.

Fast forward 50 years and statistics is much more important.

Fighting misinformation is mostly statistics. Public policy depends on statistics.

Heck, what SpaceX does is more machine learning (which is all statistics) more than calculous.

Democracy depends on an informed citizenry, especially one that can tell truth from lies.

We need to update our education system for the needs of 2020.
